CLASSROOM
We watched How Melody Works
- Reviewed/Remembered Information
- History of music
- Started off with a pentatonic scale
- Musicians all over the world banded together to make it universal
- “Evolution” of music to correlate with one another
LAB
We then watched the tutorial and write the melody to twinkle twinkle. and experimented with Hookpad, exploring how to input melodies and chords. We even explored Instruments and how the whole application works.
PRACTICE ROOM
I was able to get through the quizlets like a breeze. I even explored new concepts in some quizlets as well!

Melody Composition Terms
- Theme – a longer, more flowing melodic idea
- Motive – a short, rhythmic idea
- Period – musical sentence/standard period/8 measures
- Phrase – sentence fragment/8 measure period of music/average 4 measures
- Antecedent (Question) Phrase – First Phrase/Question Phrase
- Consequent (Answer) Phrase – Second Phrase/Consequence Phrase
- Scale Degrees
- Tonic – One scale degree creates a feeling of stability and resolution
- Supertonic, Mediant, Submediant – Several scale degrees create a high level of tension/need to resolve the tonic
- Dominant, Subdominant, Leading Tone – Scale degrees with a moderate level of tension
- Steps – Any movement using half or whole steps
- Leaps – Any movement using intervals larger than a whole-step
- Conjunct motion – Melody built primarily out of steps
- Disjunct motion – Melody using built primarily using steps
- Repetition – Use repeated material to create a link between the two phrases of a period
- Contrast – Write two phrases that contain contrasting material to create tension and interest
- Variation – Halfway between repetition and contrast. The two phrases include some recognizable material and some varied material.

- I was able to explore and get used to the system pretty quickly, as expected.
WHAT I LEARNED and PROBLEMS I SOLVED
At the end of the day, we were able to form a large collaboration with peers in starting a project. Since I immediately got the system of how things work with the application and the provided tools, I feel like I’m ready to work together to make something epic.
